In the mid 80’s Mario Raffin planted about 2 acres of a mixed field blend on their property on Fisher Ln just off Broadway. This old family vineyard saw dozens of harvests with friends and family and great traditional family winemaking. When Mario passed in 2012, his children had little interest in maintaining the vineyard. So the labor and grapes went to a slew of home winemakers for 10 years. Unfortunately they also did a poor job keeping the vines healthy and vibrant, so the place went into a bit a disarray. I took over the vineyard lease in 2022 and immediately began restoring the top soil with cover crops, sheep grazing and compost. Mostly half of the vineyard has been removed due to excessive eutypa and dead wood. Over the years we’ve seen great improvement in the soil health, even turning most of the dead wood into biochar and replacing back into the vine rows. The regenerative practices here are a true passion project, but also a proof of concept. I have not done a single spray in the vineyard this year. And the replacement vines (sometimes restarted from just a small ground sucker. Are revitalized with great vigor. The Rita’s Field Blend was made to showcase this study and work. This shows that bottles purchased go to help continue this regenerative practice and small scale ecology project.

2024 Sunfisher brings to mind the wonderful ability of decomposed lava rock of Moon Mountain and alluvial gravelly loam of sonoma mountain chardonnay to bring texture and brightness to a white wine. This small vineyard of 20 year old head trained vines is a rarity to find in Sonoma Valley. Blended with a bit of PG and GW. The grenache blanc brings refreshing characteristics and mouth tingly acidity with texture and some mouth feel from the semillon. Chardonnay brings structure and the PG, GW bring lots of fruit to balance. A great light white wine for any setting and lighter meal. The lower abv makes it very easy to drink and begs to be revisited - rapidly.

Our old family friends, Larson Family Winery, grow this 30 year old pinot gris and gewürztraminer in the old flood plains of Los Carneros AVA next to Sonoma Creek. CCOF certified for over 30 years, Tom was never a believer in spraying chemicals for the safety of his children and employees. This is also the site of the old Sonoma Rodeo where our grandfather broke many a horse and many bones also. There used to be much more PG, GW and riesling and sylvaner planted in Sonoma. Making one of these Alsatian blends locally is a dream come true. With typical big tropical aromatics, this is what Tom Larson would call and “all day” wine. Something you could drink….all day long - “All Day Rodeo Wine”

The Lovall Valley region that is split between Sonoma Valley, Moon Mountain and Napa Valley is a unique micro climate of the north bay wine country. Frost is possible here in this little hilly bowl at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain range. In 2022 there was a heat wave during harvest that shocked the vines and stopped ripening. The result is a lower ABV cabernet sauvignon with plenty of tannin and acidity. I enjoy thinking about this as an homage to the Loire Valley lighter reds that I love so much.

Destemmed, open top ferment, manual punchdowns, pressed to barrel. The name tells it all. These red blends are an homage to where and how I learned to make wine. All destemmed, manual punchdowns, ripe fruit. All from Sonoma. This is a big, classic red blend that much like the older organic wines of the 80s and 90s from the Valley has lots of acidity to stabilize and shine in the wine. As they said at Ravenswood, “No Wimpy Wines!” well this definitely checks that box. Spicy, tobacco, dried deep purple fruits. Phew! Zero/Zero

This was our first year farming this hill top, beautiful 10 acre vineyard of Pinot Noir on Lakeville Highway in the Petaluma Gap region. I decided to have a go at a more burgundian style, fully destemmed and aged in neutral barrels with. The acidity took a long time to integrate into the wine and reveal the underlying cherry, beautiful black tea, spice and flowery notes of this bigger pinot.

Next door to the Rademacher Vineyard on Carriger Rd lives Bob Alder. On an ancient river bed with deep top soil (he says 8 feet!). He has Merlot and grafted over half the vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon. Altar is a quick destemmed fermentation of the young grafted vines. Just two barrels. Young and playful, it’s a fun expression of Cab with time to age as well!

Rademacher Vineyard

Neutral Barrel 20 months

Since I started making wine in 2016, the Rademacher Vineyard is the last one standing. With the classic “Sonoma Eucalyptus” and big fruit. These wines make zero/zero winemaking easy. The beautiful top soil, rich with native aromatic ground cover make a special nose on this wine that’s at this point easily blindable. As usual, these reds, especially the first vintage away from making wine in Glen Ellen, the style was the same - 100% destemmed, manual punchdowns and old barrels for as many months as possible.
